The Sporting Life: Golf & Tennis & Stadium Play

Is Charleston a Golfer’s paradise? Ask anyone who’s ever played one of our world-class courses and you’ll get a resounding “Yes!” And the professional golf world agrees, selecting Charleston as the site for many international tournaments, including the 2012 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s Ocean Course. Known for its beautiful – and challenging – seaside links, outstanding play is offered on courses designed by the greats of the game, including Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Fazio and Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Charleston also lays claim to a unique historical legacy, as the site of America’s first golf club, established in 1786 in what is now downtown Charleston. It’s no wonder then, that enthusiasts of the game flock to play its many public and private courses.

Named America’s Best Tennis Town by the U.S. Tennis Association, Charleston is a paradise for tennis enthusiasts. Ranked #1 in Tennis Magazine’s “Greatest U.S. Tennis Resorts” and “No. 1 Tennis Resort in the World” by TennisResortsOnline, Kiawah Island offers programs for both beginners and practiced players, under the direction of tennis pro Roy Barth. Tennis Magazine also ranked Wild Dunes Resort, on the Isle of Palms, a “U.S. Top 10 Tennis Resort.” Daniel Island hosts the Family Circle Cup, a nine-day premier tournament that draws the biggest names in women’s tennis.

Charleston is also home to professional and semi-pro sports teams, including the RiverDogs (baseball) and Stingrays (hockey) and the Battery (soccer.)
